COVID-19, Mental Health, and Yoga

COVID-19 has put a burden on all of us. We are living in such uncertain times and it’s easy to get lost in the noise. The outbreak of COVID-19 is stressful and it can be difficult to cope with the fear, anxiety and frustration.

Our mental health is in danger now more than ever. But there are ways we can manage and cope with all this uncertainty.

It is so important to stay home. But it is so taxing on our mental health and it can trigger a tremendous amount of stress. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, stress during an infection outbreak could include:

  • fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones
  • changes in sleep or eating patterns
  • difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • worsening of chronic health problems
  • an increased use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs

It seems like all we do now is eat sleep and breathe COVID-19. During breakfast, over the phone, at the dinner table- it’s all we talk about. COVID-19 has instilled such as fear in many of us. Heightening our levels of anxiety and even triggering expressions of irritability and anger.

We may be stuck at home but remember, stuck at home means that you’re safe. And there are plenty of things you can do to support yourself:

  • take a break from the news
  • take care of your body by eating regular and exercising
  • follow a schedule but find time to unwind by trying new hobbies
  • connect with family and friends and express anything you may be feeling

We may not be able to control the world, but we can control what we can do to stay healthy. Both physically and mentally.

Amongst all this chaos, a friend from Chicago offered me to partake in his hour meditation class via Zoom. I figured- I have nothing else to do so why the hell not! This was the very first time I’ve tried any sort of yoga or meditation.  

At first, I found it difficult to even unplug. I was checking my phone and allowing all these distractions to stop me from meditating. So I put on some Bon Iver, set my phone on silent and threw it in the drawer.

It was a strange feeling. I began to be feel very emotional. Tears even rolled down my cheek. I realized I never really gave myself permission to feel what I was feeling during this pandemic.

I allowed myself to feel the anxiety, the fear, the sadness- all these emotions finally released in a quiet and open space- and it was painfully peaceful.  

If there is something to take away from this and keep in mind is this:

Whatever you are feeling during this weird time is one thousand percent valid
